Chromium: does it help with blood sugar? Dosage and kidney cautions

Chromium is a mineral that may modestly — but with real evidence — help blood sugar control in people with insulin resistance (when insulin is present but blood sugar doesn't come down well). Take 200–400 mcg a day, and don't go over 400 mcg. There are cases of kidney damage in people who took too much hoping to lose weight.

Who it’s for

People with insulin resistance, such as high blood sugar or middle-aged belly fat

Daily dose

200–400 mcg a day. Don't go over 400 mcg

When

Sticking to the right amount matters more than timing. Getting it from a multivitamin or mineral blend is fine

Best form

Chromium picolinate (the most studied) or active GTF chromium

What is chromium?

Chromium is a mineral your body needs only in tiny amounts (a trace mineral). It acts as a "helper part" that lets insulin (the hormone that lowers blood sugar) send its signal to cells.

Put simply, when insulin knocks on a cell's door, chromium helps the door open more easily. That's why many people look to it for blood sugar and weight management.

It's found in food, but only about 2% gets absorbed. The US adequate daily intake is about 35 mcg for men and 25 mcg for women.

Chromium benefits: what research shows

  • Blood sugar: When multiple clinical studies are combined, fasting and after-meal blood sugar dropped slightly. In one study, taking 200 mcg a day for 16 weeks lowered HbA1c (your average blood sugar over 2–3 months) by about 1%.
  • Cravings: Some research suggests it may help reduce carb cravings.
  • Weight: People with obesity who took it for 6–12 weeks lost an average of 1.1 kg (about 2.4 lb). It's not a dramatic effect.
  • Cholesterol: Some data show HDL (good cholesterol) went up and LDL (bad cholesterol) went down.
Benefits show up mainly in people who are low in chromium or have insulin resistance. If your blood sugar is normal, you'll likely notice little difference.

Who it's for / who can skip it

Good for you if

  • □ Your fasting blood sugar is borderline, or you've been diagnosed with diabetes (if you take medication, talk to your doctor)
  • □ You have belly fat and have a hard time losing weight
  • □ You keep craving sweets, rice or bread
  • □ You're losing weight while exercising

You can skip it, or be careful, if

  • Your blood sugar is normal and you don't have insulin resistance: it does very little.
  • Your kidneys or liver aren't healthy: Never take high doses, and talk to your doctor before taking it.

Types of chromium: picolinate vs. GTF

TypeFeaturesBest for
Chromium picolinateThe most clinical research; a reliable, low-cost choiceFirst-time users
GTF chromium (active form)Bound to niacinamide and amino acids — an active form your body can use right away. Has data in people with diabetesPeople focused mainly on blood sugar control
You don't have to buy chromium on its own. Getting it from a multivitamin or a mineral blend with vitamin D, magnesium and chromium is also a good option.

Chromium daily dose: don't go over 400 mcg

Bottom line: 200–400 mcg a day, no more than 400 mcg.

Daily amountVerdict
50–200 mcgSafe range
200–400 mcgTypical dose for blood sugar support
600 mcg or moreCases of kidney problems within a few weeks
1,000 mcg or moreCases of raised liver enzymes, low blood pressure, dizziness and kidney failure
  • Some say up to 1,000 mcg is generally fine, but problems have occurred even at 600 mcg. Staying at 400 mcg or less is the safe choice.
  • Multivitamins and blood sugar supplements also contain chromium. Add them all up.

Chromium side effects: cases of kidney and liver damage

If you stick to the right amount, chromium rarely causes problems. The problem is taking large amounts for weight loss or blood sugar. Most real cases of harm involved this kind of overuse.

  • One person took 1,200–2,400 mcg a day (6–12 times the right amount) for 5 months and developed anemia, abnormal liver function and acute kidney failure requiring dialysis. Fortunately, they recovered after dialysis.
  • In another case, taking 600 mcg a day for 6 weeks led to kidney inflammation (interstitial nephritis). It's rare, but it means harm can occur even slightly over the upper limit, and even after a short time.
  • Kidney damage has also been reported in someone taking a multivitamin that contained chromium.
If you notice less urine, swelling, or unexplained tiredness and dizziness while taking it, stop and get checked by a doctor.

Medications and conditions to watch

  • Check Wegovy, Mounjaro (GLP-1 drugs for weight loss and diabetes) — Blood sugar may drop further, causing low blood sugar — talk to your doctor
  • Caution Being treated for kidney disease — Chromium may strain the kidneys — no high doses; talk to your doctor before taking it

Combinations

Works well with: Multivitamin, Magnesium, Vitamin D

Frequently asked questions

Does chromium really lower blood sugar?

In studies, fasting and after-meal blood sugar dropped slightly. The effect isn't large and shows up mainly in people with insulin resistance. It can't replace diabetes medication.

Does chromium help with weight loss?

It may help reduce carb cravings, but weight loss averages only about 1 kg (2 lb) or so. Taking more to lose weight can damage your kidneys.

How much chromium can I take a day?

200–400 mcg a day is typical, and staying at or under 400 mcg is safest. Include the chromium in your multivitamin in your total.

Which is better: chromium picolinate or GTF chromium?

Picolinate has the most research and a low cost per day. GTF is an active form that some people choose when blood sugar control is their main goal. Both are good choices.

Is chromium bad for your kidneys?

At the right amount, it rarely causes problems. But there are cases of kidney damage at 600 mcg or more, so stay at or under 400 mcg, and talk to your doctor first if your kidneys aren't healthy.

Can I take chromium while on Wegovy or Mounjaro?

Your blood sugar may drop further, causing low blood sugar. Talk to your doctor first.
