Eggshell membrane (NEM): how to take it for knee and finger joints

Eggshell membrane is a joint supplement for people with aching or stiff knees, fingers or ankles, and for older adults whose joints have weakened. Studies used 250–500 mg a day, and be sure to check the label says "NEM" as the ingredient. It's often taken with inflammation-support ingredients like omega-3 and MSM.

Who it’s for

People with knee, finger or ankle pain or morning stiffness, and older adults with weakened joints

Daily dose

250 mg for maintenance, 500 mg for more active support

When

Once a day, at the same time every day

Best form

Hydrolyzed NEM (don't confuse it with similar names like DEM or PEM)

What is eggshell membrane?

When you crack an egg, there's a thin white film stuck to the inside of the shell. That's the eggshell membrane. This joint supplement is extracted from that film.

The membrane is similar in makeup to the cartilage in your joints. It contains small amounts of several cartilage components at once (glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, collagen and more).

So unlike supplements loaded with a single ingredient, it aims for cartilage building blocks + inflammation control together.

Eggshell membrane benefits: where it may help

  • Joint building blocks: It supplies several cartilage components together.
  • Inflammation control: Research has looked at how it reduces excess release of the substances your body uses to send inflammation signals (cytokines).
  • Pain and stiffness: In studies using 250 mg and 500 mg a day, pain, stiffness and walking ability all improved.

It's an ingredient with active recent research and a growing number of clinical trials (studies in people). However, there are still no head-to-head studies showing it works better than a high dose of a single ingredient like glucosamine.

Who it suits / who should try something else first

It's a good fit if:

  • □ Your knees, fingers or ankles ache or hurt
  • □ Your joints feel stiff when you wake up
  • □ You can feel your joints weakening with age
  • □ You're an older adult looking to pick one joint supplement

See a doctor first if you have:

  • A herniated disc in your back: This is a structural problem where the cushion between the bones has slipped out, so a supplement is unlikely to fix it. Get medical care first.
If the pain is severe, or the joint is swollen and warm, see a doctor before trying supplements.

Eggshell membrane daily dose

GoalDaily dose
Steady maintenance250 mg
More active support for pain500 mg

Studies found benefits starting at 250 mg. Take it once a day, at the same time every day.

"Can't I just eat more eggs?" No. The membrane's molecules are very large, so eating it as-is means almost none gets absorbed. It has to be a hydrolysate (broken down into small pieces with water) to be absorbed.

How to choose eggshell membrane: look for NEM

  1. Make sure the ingredient is "NEM" — It's the eggshell membrane ingredient with the most research behind it. It's also been officially recognized for joint function in some countries.
  2. Don't be fooled by similar names like DEM or PEM — The names look alike, but they're different ingredients.
  3. Check how many mg are in each capsule — See whether it's 250 mg or 500 mg and match your daily amount.
There are single-ingredient products and combination products mixed with inflammation-support ingredients like MSM, boswellia or curcumin. If buying several bottles separately is a hassle, a combination product is convenient.

Good pairings

A common basic stack for joint support is eggshell membrane + omega-3 + MSM.

IngredientWhat it does
Eggshell membraneCartilage building blocks + inflammation control
Omega-3Whole-body inflammation support
MSMJoint pain and inflammation support
Curcumin, boswelliaWhen you want extra inflammation support

Start with eggshell membrane alone, and if it's not enough, add one at a time.

Combinations

Works well with: Omega-3, MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), Curcumin (Turmeric), Boswellia

Frequently asked questions

How much eggshell membrane should I take a day?

Studies used 250 mg or 500 mg a day. Take 250 mg for maintenance, or 500 mg if you have pain and want more active support.

Can I just eat the membrane from eggshells?

Don't expect much from it. The molecules are large, so eating it as-is means almost none gets absorbed. Take a hydrolyzed supplement instead.

What's the difference between NEM and DEM?

Both are names of eggshell membrane ingredients, but they're different ingredients. NEM has the most research behind it, so look for NEM on the label.

Which is better, eggshell membrane or glucosamine?

Eggshell membrane contains small amounts of several cartilage components and also aims to control inflammation. But no studies have compared the two directly yet. Pick one and take it consistently.

Does eggshell membrane help a herniated disc?

A herniated disc is a structural problem, so a supplement is unlikely to fix it. Get medical treatment first.
