Diosmin for leg swelling, cramps and hemorrhoids: when and how to take it

Diosmin strengthens the leg veins (the blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart), so it may help with leg swelling, tingling and frequent cramps. Take 600 mg a day, split between morning and evening. If you get cramps often, it's commonly paired with magnesium.

Who it’s for

People whose legs swell, tingle or cramp often, people who stand at work all day, women over 40

Daily dose

600 mg a day (two 300 mg tablets or one 600 mg tablet)

When

Split between morning and evening (once a day for 600 mg tablets)

Best form

Diosmin alone or diosmin + hesperidin blend

What is diosmin?

Diosmin is a flavonoid (a plant pigment and protective compound) made from hesperidin, which is found in the peel of citrus fruits like oranges.

Blood in your legs has to travel up to your heart against gravity. But when vein walls get loose, blood and fluid pool in your legs, making them swollen, heavy and tingly, and more prone to cramps.

Diosmin tightens these vein walls and reduces fluid leaking out of blood vessels. It also supports lymph flow (the system that drains extra fluid from your body), which may help ease swelling. In Europe and some other countries, it has enough research behind it to be used as an over-the-counter medicine ingredient for vein circulation and hemorrhoid symptoms.

Who it may help

  • □ Your calves swell and feel heavy by evening
  • □ You often get calf cramps while sleeping
  • □ Your legs tingle and feel tight
  • □ You stand or sit all day at work
  • □ You're a woman over 40
  • □ Your face, hands or feet are often puffy in the morning

Many people say swelling and tingling eased fairly quickly.

People with hemorrhoids often look for it too. For early-stage hemorrhoids — bleeding, pain, or tissue that pops out after a bowel movement and goes back in — it may help manage symptoms. Some people also keep taking it for maintenance after symptoms are under control. But see a doctor first to find out what stage your hemorrhoids are.

Some sources say it's okay to take after the first 3 months (first trimester) of pregnancy, but always talk to your doctor first.

How to take diosmin and dosage

Bottom line: 600 mg a day, split between morning and evening.

ProductHow to take
300 mg product1 tablet in the morning, 1 in the evening (600 mg a day)
600 mg high-strength product1 tablet a day

300 mg products used to be the norm, but now many high-strength products contain 600 mg per tablet.

When symptoms flare up, the dose is sometimes raised to as much as 1,800 mg a day for a short time. But that's a treatment dose, so don't increase it on your own — talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If leg cramps are your concern, diosmin + magnesium is the most common combination. It supports both circulation and muscle relaxation. Some people also add vitamin E or B vitamins as extra support.

How to choose a diosmin product

  1. Check how many mg of diosmin are in each tablet. A product that makes it easy to reach 600 mg a day is most convenient.
  2. If it's a blend, check that it has enough diosmin. Many US supplements mix diosmin with hesperidin, vitamin K2 and more. These blends offer good combinations and value, but their quality control may not be as strict as for medicines.
  3. Pick one main circulation ingredient. Grape leaf extract, centella (gotu kola) and diosmin are used for similar purposes. Rather than buying several at once, build around one.
If the ingredients and amounts are the same, the brand doesn't matter much.

Diosmin side effects

It's generally gentle, so there aren't many side effects to worry about. Just be aware of these:

  • Dizziness or headache: Can happen as blood vessels relax.
  • Stomach pain or upset: Less likely if you take it after a meal.

If the discomfort continues, lower the dose or stop. If one leg suddenly swells, hurts or turns red, don't rely on supplements — see a doctor right away.

Combinations

Works well with: Magnesium, Vitamin E, B vitamins (B complex)
