Does green-lipped mussel really help joints? How to choose and what to watch for

Green-lipped mussel is an anti-inflammatory supplement that may help with wear-and-tear joint pain, like in the knees. If you buy it, choose PCSO-524 (Lyprinol), the ingredient used in most studies, and start with 2 capsules a day (4 if you want a stronger approach). It's pricey and there isn't much research, though, so think of it as a backup that works alongside other joint supplements.

Who it’s for

Middle-aged and older adults with wear-and-tear joint pain in the knees or back, and people who often get sore muscles after exercise

Daily dose

Lyprinol: 2 capsules a day for maintenance, 4 for a stronger approach

When

After meals, consistently, for at least 4–8 weeks

Best form

A patented lipid extract (PCSO-524) rather than dried powder

What is green-lipped mussel?

Green-lipped mussel is a mussel from the waters around New Zealand. It gets its name from the green edge of its shell.

The mussel meat contains several kinds of unsaturated fatty acids (healthy fats). These fats may help ease joint pain by blocking the pathway your body uses to make inflammatory substances. It works in a way similar to how omega-3 calms inflammation.

Green-lipped mussel benefits: what did studies find?

Bottom line: some studies found it helped joint pain, but there aren't many of them.

StudyWhoResult
Animal studyAnimals with inflammationInflammation went down about as much as with a pain reliever (naproxen)
Korean university hospital study60 people with knee arthritis, 8 weeksPain and mobility improved in 53% at 4 weeks and 80% at 8 weeks
Polish study50 people with knee arthritis, 12 weeksPain and mobility improved. The group taking low-purity omega-3 saw no change
US study32 healthy adultsMarkers of muscle damage, pain and inflammation dropped after intense exercise
It doesn't work right away. In the studies, changes started showing up around 4 weeks, so give it at least 1–2 months before you decide.

An honest take: is it worth the price?

It's not all upside. Keep these in mind too.

  • It contains very little omega-3. Each capsule has only tens of mg of omega-3. So some experts say omega-3 is unlikely to be the reason it works.
  • There isn't much research. It has less clinical data than other joint and anti-inflammatory ingredients like MSM or curcumin.
  • It's expensive. One company holds a monopoly on the ingredient, so prices don't come down much.
That's why many experts say that instead of relying on green-lipped mussel alone, it's better to combine it with other joint supplements like omega-3, MSM, chondroitin or curcumin. With joint supplements, people often see results from a combination rather than from a single one.

How to choose green-lipped mussel: PCSO-524 (Lyprinol)

Green-lipped mussel products come in two main types.

TypeWhat it isVerdict
Patented lipid extract (PCSO-524, Lyprinol)Only the oil is extracted from the mussel and blended with krill oil and olive oil. Most studies used this ingredientRecommended
Dried powderRegular ingredient made by drying and grinding the mussel meatAverage

Just check these on the label:

  1. Does it say "PCSO-524" or "Lyprinol"? — If you're hoping for the results seen in studies, it should be this ingredient.
  2. What's in each capsule — Lyprinol contains 37.5 mg mussel extract + 12.5 mg krill oil + olive oil per capsule. The numbers may look small, but that's normal.
  3. How many capsules a day, and what that costs per month — It's an expensive supplement, so be sure to work out the monthly cost.

How to take green-lipped mussel and how much

These amounts are for Lyprinol (PCSO-524).

GoalDaily amount

Active pain, stronger approach4 capsules
Highest amount used in studies8 capsules
  1. Start with 2 capsules a day and see how your stomach handles it.
  2. If you have pain, increase to 4 capsules.
  3. Take it consistently for 4–8 weeks and see if things improve. If nothing changes, switching to a different joint supplement is an option.

Green-lipped mussel side effects and cautions

Most people do fine, but be careful if any of these apply.

  • Seafood or shellfish allergy: It's made from mussels, so it can cause an allergic reaction. Don't take it.
  • Pregnancy: It hasn't been shown to be safe yet. Avoid it.
  • If you take blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin, etc.) or circulation supplements: The anti-clotting effects add up, so you may bruise easily or bleeding may be slow to stop. Talk to your doctor first.
  • If you have surgery or dental work coming up: For the same reason, it's safer to stop ahead of time.

Mild stomach upset (bloating, nausea) can happen. Take it after meals, and lower the dose if it still bothers you.

Medications and conditions to watch

  • Check Antiplatelets and anticoagulants (aspirin, warfarin, etc.) — Anti-clotting effects add up, raising the risk of bruising and bleeding — talk to your doctor
  • Check Circulation supplements — May increase the tendency to bleed — talk to your doctor before combining

Combinations

Works well with: Omega-3, MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), Chondroitin, Curcumin (Turmeric)

Frequently asked questions

Does green-lipped mussel help knee joints?

A study in people with knee arthritis found pain and mobility improved after 8 weeks. But there aren't many studies, so it's best seen as a supporting player alongside other joint supplements.

How long does green-lipped mussel take to work?

In studies, changes started around 4 weeks and improved further by 8 weeks. Give it at least 1–2 months of steady use.

What's the difference between Lyprinol and regular green-lipped mussel powder?

Lyprinol (PCSO-524) is a patented ingredient made by extracting only the oil from the mussel, and most studies used it. Powder is a regular ingredient made from dried, ground mussel meat. If you're hoping for results, choose a product labeled PCSO-524.

Can I take green-lipped mussel with omega-3?

Yes, people often take them together for joints. But both tend to thin the blood, so if you take blood thinners, talk to your doctor first.

Does green-lipped mussel have side effects?

Usually just mild stomach upset. But avoid it if you have a seafood allergy, and be careful if you take blood thinners, since bruising and bleeding may increase.

How many green-lipped mussel capsules should I take a day?

For Lyprinol, 2 capsules a day for maintenance, or 4 if you have pain. Studies have used up to 8 a day.
