How to choose a combination supplement
- Enough of the key ingredients? — The guide: vitamin C 1,000 mg a day, vitamin D 1,000–2,000 IU for maintenance, zinc around 20 mg (up to 30 mg for a specific reason), quercetin around 500 mg. Elderberry and echinacea have no set standard dose, so the listed amounts are compared with each other. If most ingredients are under a quarter of the guide, they're 'token ingredients', so 'Not recommended'
- Hidden amounts — If main ingredients like elderberry or echinacea are bundled in a proprietary blend without individual amounts, 'Not recommended'. If only minor ingredients like beta-glucan are hidden, it's noted in the reasons
- Upper limits and excess — Over 40 mg zinc a day is 'Not recommended' (long-term use can lead to low copper). Keep vitamin D from all products at 4,000 IU a day or less — 5,000 IU in one product is treated as a 3–6 month short-term option, with other D stopped. Also check vitamin A (retinol) at 3,000 mcg and B6 at 100 mg
- Overlap with other supplements — If you already take a multivitamin, vitamin D, zinc or ginseng product, add up the totals. Take zinc at a different time from calcium and iron
- Better than buying separately? — Vitamins C and D and zinc at standard doses in one product means fewer pills, which is convenient. If vitamin C and zinc are small and it's mostly elderberry, it's the same as plain elderberry; elderberry and echinacea are for cold and flu season, so no need to take them year-round
- Format — Capsules and softgels hold more of each ingredient. Gummies and powders contain sugar (2–7 g), and gummies tend to be low-potency — no points off, just noted in the reasons
- Cost per day and label check — Price ÷ count × label daily amount. Products not confirmed on the NIH DSLD label database max out at 'Depends on your needs', regardless of brand. Review counts and star ratings are not used
